via gHacks technology news by Martin on February 12, 2008
Wednesday is the day of the week where I look back at the last seven days and discover which software that has been previously mentioned at Ghacks was updated in that time. Only free and open source software is considered for this article. New applications on the other hand will initially receive their own article and will then be integrated in the software updates series. This week was a rather...

Warning Unresponsive Script in Firefox
via gHacks technology news by Martin on February 17, 2008
I have been encountering a warning in Firefox lately which told the that a script on the current website was unresponsive asking me if I wanted to stop or continue. That’s a pretty vague warning and I was puzzled at first about the cause of it. The strange thing was that the website seemed to have loaded completely and that the warning was displayed despite of this. There are two possible causes...

Encrypting an USB Drive with True Crypt
via gHacks technology news by Martin on February 29, 2008
My last True Crypt guide dates way back and the purchase of my new shiny 500 Megabyte Maxtor USB drive made me think about writing a new guide that takes the changes of the software into account. My old Teac USB drive started to behave weirdly every now and then which I saw as a first sign of reaching the end of its life cycle and since I did not want to take any chances I decided to buy a new...

There is a multitude of torrent search engines out there. Now and then a new one pops up and you head on over to check it out.Pizzatorrentis the latest in a long line of torrent search engines. An initial glance at the site pulls up an interface much like popular search engine Youtorrent albeit in a different colour. Searching pulls up the same results as Youtorrent. Start Program after Idle Time
via gHacks technology news by Martin on March 06, 2008
Idle Time is the time where the computer is just sitting idle using little to no cpu power. This happens on my computer for instance if I leave it on to finish a download and after that download finishes it wastes some power doing nothing. A good way to put your cpu to good use during that time is to start a program once the computer has been idle for some time. This could be a maintenance tool...

The best Usenet Search Engines
via gHacks technology news by Martin on March 07, 2008
This article is going to list some of the best Usenet search engines that are freely available. The Usenet is considered by many a dark side of the Internet, something that those who know do not talk about and those who do not know don’t want to know about because it seems utterly complicated to begin with. The real benefits of the Usenet in my opinion are speed, if you have a good provider that...

Add new Applications to CCleaner
via gHacks technology news by Martin on March 16, 2008
While I was researching one topic I stumbled upon another that is related to CCleaner that might be of interest to everyone who is using that application. CCleaner comes preinstalled with the ability to clean temporary files and data of several applications such as Paintshop Pro, Macromedia Flash or Symantec Antivirus. New applications can be added to this list and there is actually an improved...

Firefox View Dependencies
via gHacks technology news by Martin on April 29, 2008
Randy was commenting on today’s article about using several Firefox profiles pointing out that he would love a list of the security add-ons that I was using in my secure profile. One of those is called View Dependencies. You have to understand that loading a website is not like downloading one file to your computer. A website can be broken into several files that are all downloaded separately....

Enable or disable the Windows Firewall in Vista in one click
via gHacks technology news by Martin on May 01, 2008
The Windows Firewall in Windows Vista cannot be quickly disabled or enabled. A user who wants to enable or disable it would have to open the Control Panel and load the Windows Firewall in the Security tab. The option to Turn the Windows Firewall on or off would appear in the menu. That’s not a practicable option if you have to turn it off and on several times a day, maybe every time you switch...
