open-access is the future: boycott locked-down academic journals
via apophenia by zephoria on February 06, 2008
On one hand, I'm excited to announce that my article "Facebook's Privacy Trainwreck: Exposure, Invasion, and Social Convergence" has been published in Convergence 14(1) (special issue edited by Henry Jenkins and Mark Deuze). On the other hand, I'm deeply depressed because I know that most of you will never read it. It is not because you aren't interested (although many of you...

a google horror story: what happens when you are disappeared
via apophenia by zephoria on February 07, 2008
Earlier this week, an acquaintance of mine found himself trapped in a Kafka-esque nightmare, a nightmare that should make all of us stop and think. He wants to remain anonymous so let's call him Bob. Bob was an early adopter of all things Google. His account was linked to all sorts of Google services. Gmail was the most important thing to him - he'd been using it for four years and...

how youth find privacy in interstitial spaces
via apophenia by zephoria on March 09, 2008
The NYTimes ran a piece today called Text Generation Gap: U R 2 Old (JK). (Note: the article is very American-centric - in the States, older folks tend to be texting illiterate.) The article begins with an anecdote of a parent shuttling around his daughter and her friend. They are talking and dad butts in and they roll their eyes. And then there is silence. When dad comments to his daughter...

just because we can, doesn't mean we should
via apophenia by zephoria on February 03, 2008
Learning to moderate desires and balance consequences is a sign of maturity. I could eat only chocolate for all of my meals, but it doesn't mean that I should. If I choose to do so anyhow, I might be forced to face consequences that I will not like. "Just because I can doesn't mean I should" is a decision dilemma and it doesn't just apply to personal decisions. On a nation-state...

Palestinian girls, dating, and the mobile phone
via apophenia by zephoria on April 14, 2008
Last fall, Hiyam Hijazi-Omari and Rivka Ribak presented a paper called "Playing With Fire: On the domestication of the mobile phone among Palestinian teenage girls in Israel" at AOIR. They studied teen girls who received their mobile phones from their boyfriends and hid them from everyone else. Through this lens, they examine how the mobile phone alters social dynamics, relationships, and the...

Ben Rigby and Rock the Vote have put together a book for activists, politicos, and organizers called "Mobilizing Generation 2.0: A Practical Guide to Using Web 2.0." It is a how-to guide to help those who want to mobilize using the web, focusing on how organizers can leverage blogging, social network sites, photo/video sharing, mobile phones, wikis, maps and virtual worlds. The Economist Debate on Social "Networking"
via apophenia by zephoria on January 15, 2008
The Economist is doing an "Oxford-style debate" on the following proposition: "Social networking technologies will bring large [positive] changes to educational methods, in and out of the classroom"Given that MySpace and Facebook are ubiquitous, can social networking be defined as the "collective pow

This entry goes out to all of the librarians and information school students who read this blog. One of the best parts of being in an information school is that you get to learn all sorts of things about people who loved information long before there was an economy for it.
