March 11, 2008: China's Cat Cleaning
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by xoxoxoBruce on March 11, 2008
From the Daily Mail...Quote: Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games. Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around. Then they are trucked to what animal welfare...

May 4, 2008: Banana exhibit
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by Undertoad on May 04, 2008
IotD is late to this one which went off two months ago. Artist Stefan Sagmeister is responsible for this one, part of an exhibit at NYC's Deitch gallery entitled "Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far". In this exhibit Sagmeister reveals thoughtful mottos in interesting ways. The interesting thing about this installation, which consists of 10,000 bananas and some glue, is that it changes...

January 16, 2008: Giant Spider
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by xoxoxoBruce on January 16, 2008
At 5th and Morrill, in Reno Nevada, there's what appears to be a giant spider on the roof. shiver I hate when that happens.Thankfully, from ground level it's not a spider, but a beetle... VW Beetle. Lot's of predators in Reno

January 21, 2008: Transparent Toaster
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by Clodfobble on January 21, 2008
The inventors of this little device claim it will make burnt toast a thing of the past. The glass itself is the heating element, so the toasting is more even, as well as completely visible to the discerning toast connoisseur. A traditional timer is also included for those who are too busy to watch their toast brown. On th

January 23, 2008: Italian ball pit!
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by Clodfobble on January 23, 2008
It's not just art, it's fun! Italian artist Graziano Cecchini recently released more than a million plastic balls from the top of Rome's famous Spanish Steps monument in a political protest."This was an artistic gesture to demonstrate the problems we have in Italy and to do so, I used art," he said. "Both the Left and the Right are telling us so many lies, and I and the Italians have...

January 24, 2008: Ice piano
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by Clodfobble on January 24, 2008
This working piano made of ice was unveiled at the 20th International Snow-Sculpture Art Expo in Harbin, China. Designed and built by a local landscaping company, the instrument can not only be played by tourists, it can also automatically play more than 30 classical pieces.I question how easy it is to keep in tune, being outside in even moderately fluctuating temperatures.

January 27, 2008: The rat king
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by YellowBolt on January 28, 2008
Or rather, a rat king:Wikipedia has more about this:Quote: Rat kings are cryptozoological phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, and excrement. The animals consequently grow together while joined at the tails, which are often broken. The phenomenon is particularly associated with Germany, where the majority...

Via our old IotD haunt Spluch comes this item... an item most foul. now this is obviously a product photo, and thus barely qualifies for IotD but... uh... it's a cheeseburger in a can.Now take your eyes off the nice plump ordinary cheeseburger in the front of this image.. and look at the can. And consider what, exactly, might be in there. What it might look like. What it might smell like. ...

February 2, 2008: Happy face on Mars
via The Cellar - Image of the Day by Undertoad on February 02, 2008
It isn't the first face symbol they've found on Mars, but it's the happiest. The Planetary Society blog offers this one courtesy of NASA / JPL / MSSS:Quote: This picture of a crater resembling a "happy face" was acquired by the Context Camera (CTX) on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on January 28, 2008. The unnamed crater is about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) across. It is located among...
