Pete Zaitcev: GNOME does something right
via Kernel Planet by (author unknown) on February 11, 2008
Today I plugged my iPod in, and Rawhide launched Rhythmbox, which chugged along for about half a minute, then crashed. At least it did not wipe the player's database. WTF, I thought I had all auto-run types set to off...Looks like there were some changes. No more unchecking umpteenth type of crashware. To compensate for a good thing, they worked extra hard to hide this panel. It's not...

Evgeniy Polyakov: How to measure a temperature of the body under very limited conditions.
via Kernel Planet by (author unknown) on February 14, 2008
Let's suppose one does not have a thermometer, but there are lotsof instruments and equipment around starting from screwdriver to drills, from simpleamper/voltmeter to laptop. As a prompting: there is also electricity, vater and automatic teakettle.Task is to measure temperature of the own body and decide to get or notto get an aspirin. Or make some fun from the process because of quite...

I have to mail out something. There's an address in an email I have. I want the address on the envelope. Simple task. Look at screen, get pen, write on envelope. So why did my brain instinctively make me highlight the address with the mouse, and select copy to clipboard, and then freeze in a WHAT NOW? state.I'm pretty sure this worked in the future. Why doesn't it work here in...

What is Security Enhanced PostgreSQL ? Good overview from Kaigai Kohei, with cute diagrams.Schneier blogs about the future of security as a standard feature, eliminating the "best of breed vs suites" decision:That they're forced to spend money on IT security is an artifact of the youth of the computer industry. And sooner or later the need to buy security will disappear. It will disappear...

One man, 12 nights (13 days), one bottle of cuban rum andlittle bits of scotch whisky, 82 'House M.D' series... feels good.Meanwhile got three 2-way Xeon servers with 2-4 (I forgot) gigs of RAM andgigabit link between them. Not bad for start. Also gathered lots of power and inspiration, so, here is a plan:second filesystem contest, now I will test btrfs 0.13 and btrfs-unstable in addition...

Dave Jones: wifi detectors.
via Kernel Planet by (author unknown) on May 05, 2008
I thought this was absurd when I saw it. Given the ubiquity of 802.11 signals pretty much everywhere (Even at my parents place in the boonies of the welsh valleys I noticed multiple APs), it seems kind of pointless. The sillyness doesn't stop there however. Those with a penchant for looking ridiculous can now also get some matching shoes.FAIL.wifi-detecting clothing is the hypercolor of...

419 spams are one thing, but this is going a little too far.
