Thinking About GOOG This Morning
via A VC by Fred on February 27, 2008
On Monday, I bought some more GOOG (and some more AAPL). I explained my rationale for both trades in this twitter post. I went into even more detail on the Google purchase in this covestor post.I was busy yesterday and not paying attention to techmeme, the stock market, or my portfolio (always a bad idea), and saw this twitter post by Christopher Finke. Being glad that I...

Three Reasons To Use Disqus
via A VC by Fred on May 10, 2008
First, I'd like to be perfectly clear that our firm, Union Square Ventures, is an investor in Disqus. So I am clearly biased about what I am about to say. Second, I'd like to point out that the reason we made the investment is largely based on my experience as a Disqus user for the past 10 months and the result it has had on my blog/community. Sometimes seeing is believing and it...

How Yahoo! Can Get Out Of The Microsoft Bear Hug
via A VC by Fred on February 04, 2008
Let me start this post by saying that I don't think Microsoft will achieve its goal of obtaining some sort of balance and scale in the search market with an acquisition of Yahoo! If you look at the share of search that Google has had over the past five years, it's an ever increasing line. I think that line will keep increasing, year after year, until Google has all of the search market...

Incenting The User To Put Up A Profile Picture
via A VC by Fred on March 04, 2008
I have not seen this technique before, but it sure worked with me. I logged into a brand new web service today and this was my default profile picture.Changing it was the first thing I did.Very clever.

Thoughts On FriendFeed
via A VC by Fred on March 19, 2008
I know I am late to this discussion and that many bloggers have already weighed in on this topic already. Back a few months ago, the New York Times covered FriendFeed and after reading the story I set up my FriendFeed. I have always been a fan of aggregation and life streaming. I do a bit of that at my tumblog. But Tumblr is not a lifestreaming service and FriendFeed is.I've watched...

Last.fm Jumps On The On Demand Streaming Bandwagon
via A VC by Fred on January 24, 2008
I've been saying for as long as anyone would listen to me that one day all the music ever recorded is going to be on the Internet and we are going to have sufficient bandwidth and connections on every possible listening device and at that point file based music is going to be history. I'd go back and find all the posts I've written on this topic but it would fill up the whole front...

You Had To See This Coming - MSFT To Buy YHOO
via A VC by Fred on February 01, 2008
I was going to buy Yahoo! the other day. Mark and I were emailing. I was asking how much Yahoo!'s core search business was worth if it was given over to Google. He though maybe as much as $9/share. I looked into the value of Yahoo! Japan and Alibaba. I left a comment on Paul Kedrosky's blog post about Yahoo!.But of course I never got around to buying the stock. We all knew this was coming....

Who "Owns" A Web Service
via A VC by Fred on February 01, 2008
The obvious answer is the company that built it. Google owns google.com. Facebook owns facebook.com. Craigslist owns craigslist.com. But throughout the day yesterday I was reminded that more and more these days, the users have a significant degree of ownership in these services and the most successful companies will leverage that sense of ownership and respect it.My day started yesterday with the...

delicious search
via A VC by Fred on February 03, 2008
Before delicious was sold to Yahoo!, I really wanted to see if we could make the delicious search service a major player in the search business. It seemed to me that the best way to keep delicious free to use and free of advertising was to use the data everyone was providing to offer a "people powered" search engine.Well just take a look at the top drivers of search traffic to this blog in the...

The Internet Finally Becomes A Factor In The Primaries
via A VC by Fred on February 08, 2008
Four years ago, Howard Dean and Joe Trippi showed everyone how powerful the Internet could be as a campaign and fundraising tool. This year, it seemed like it was not as important. But the news yesterday that Obama's campaign was loaded with cash and Hillary's was strapped showed that in the end, the Internet is the most powerful fundraising vehicle of them all.The following charts come...
