Redacted CIA document about torture almost entirely blacked out
via Boing Boing by Mark Frauenfelder on May 27, 2008
Mary Robinette Kowal says: On the ACLU's blog, they have a PDF of a CIA redacted document about the use of torture. The page is entirely blacked out except for the phrase, "These enhanced techniques include:" and then farther down the page, "waterboard."Link

The NYT should be embarrassed, and then embarrassed some more.
via Chris Sacca's 'What is left?' by Christopher on June 04, 2008
Yesterday's New York Times featured a piece entitled "Experts Revive Debate over Cellphones and Cancer" which illustrates that all it takes to overturn inscrutable science conducted over hundreds of entirely conclusive studies is a Larry King appearance by three surgeons with PR agents. The article clearly states the unwavering conclusion of the science community: "Cellphones emit...

That’s just cool… When asked for a comment on the fist bump, 71 year old John McCain said, “I don’t condone domestic violence… and when did we start allowing women to expoxe their arms in public?”

Custom Protocols Considered Harmful: Thin & Rack are the Platform of the Future
via James on Software - Home by james on May 31, 2008
While I was figuring out how to embed a webserver in to my new open source project, I had an epiphany: REST is the real deal, and thin, rack, and invisible are the platform of the future. It turns out that most daemon processes require a lot of code just to implement a protocol, daemonize, and manage things like PID files. From what I can tell, most of the code in many of these utilities is there...

Do you own trees?
via Seth's Blog by Seth Godin on June 01, 2008
Today's New York Times reports an astonishing fact: Book publishers wholesale their ebooks to Amazon for precisely the same price as their paper books. Amazon loses money on every ebook for the Kindle they sell because publishers don't discount zero-cost ebooks. Apparently, the publishers don't count the paper, storage, inventory, shredding and shipping expenses in their cost...

VMWare and how it effects Storage
via Joerg's Storage Blog by Joerg Hallbauer on June 02, 2008
"VMWare Changes Everything"That's a lovely marketing phrase, but when it comes to storage, it does, and it doesn't. What you really need to understand is how VMWare can effect your storage environment as well as the effects that storage has on your VMWare environment. Once you do, you'll realize that it's really just a slightly different take on what storage administrators have...

Clearing the air with Twitter
via Scobleizer -- Tech geek blogger by Robert Scoble on May 30, 2008
Yesterday Evan Williams wrote me an email telling me he wasn’t blaming me and trying to clear the air. I said “can I come over?” to talk more about these issues face-to-face. I’ve always found that dealing with unpleasant topics is always better face-to-face and not over email. He wrote back and said to come on over.I wasn’t expecting to do a video interview. I hadn’t had any sleep in...
