Did Twitter Really 'Outshine' the Mainstream Press?
via ReadWriteWeb by Josh Catone on May 14, 2008
We love Twitter just as much as any tech bloggers -- that should be clear to anyone who has read this blog over the past six months. But stories like this one from the AFP are a bit rankling. Writing about how Twitter had news of this week's deadly China earthquake as it happened, the AFP implies that this is a case of "micro-blogging outshining mainstream news." Outshine, as in "to...

Public speaking versus blogging
via blog.pmarca.com by Marc Andreessen on May 14, 2008
... call it a day. Or, you could shortcut the process by simply giving an interview to the reporter and letting him mangle what you said directly. These days, you have the option of staying home, blogging in your underwear, and not having your words mangled. I think I like the direction things are headed. Mid-year resolution #1: No more public speaking. Mid-year resolution #2: More blogging.

Ok, Wired, Let’s Do This.
via TechCrunch by Michael Arrington on May 14, 2008
A week ago Wired Magazine voiced its displeasure over our syndication partnership with the Washington Post. Wired’s Betsy Schiffman wrote “We’ve got nothing against TechCrunch, but it seems crazy-crazy to us that the Washington Post, a paper known for the sort of reporting that can take down U.S. presidents, is publishing content written by a dude who invests in the companies he writes...

via ReadWriteWeb by Alex Iskold on May 15, 2008
Web 2.0 has brought many wonderful innovations and ideas to the Internet. We can no longer imagine the web without a social dimension, and we can no longer imaginean online world that is read-only - it is now a read/write web full of user-generated content. But there is another fairly recent innovation, which might have just as profound implications. We're speaking of the contextual user...

via Official Gmail Blog by Gmail Blog on May 13, 2008
Posted by Wiltse Carpenter, Tech Lead, Gmail PerformanceGreat performance has always been an obsession at Google and it's something that we think about and work on everyday. Several levels of unfortunate
via Washington D.C. Metblogs by Don on May 13, 2008
Marc Fisher reports today that WAMU has severed their relationship with Jonetta Rose Barras, pictured right, the fiery co-host to Kojo Nnamdi on the Politics Hour on his show every Friday. That’s too bad - she’s a big part of what makes that weekly episode fun, and her slightly-too-far pushing and boisterousness lets us hear the guests and other folks on the show get pushed a little harder...

Apple updates PGP key
via MacUser by Derik DeLong on May 14, 2008
Apple authenticates itself to users using a PGP key and updates it every two years. I’ve probably written about this before, but the quick version is that authentication security is based on asymmetric keys. In other words, pairs of keys are used, one public and one private. Apple holds onto the private one not telling it to anyone. The public one is listed here. The key (pun unintended)...

ReadAir Brings Google Reader to Your Desktop [Featured Download]
via Lifehacker by Adam Pash on May 14, 2008
Windows/Mac/Linux (Adobe AIR): Free, open source application ReadAir syncs your Google Reader feeds to the comfort of your desktop. ReadAir—whose three-pane interface looks and feels much more like a desktop newsreader than Reader—also retains a lot of Google Reader features, like starring items and adding and tagging feeds. The biggest missing feature in ReadAir is its lack of keyboard...
