Why are the Microsoft Office file formats so complicated? (And some workarounds)
via Joel on Software by Joel Spolsky on February 18, 2008
Last week, Microsoft published the binary file formats for Office. These formats appear to be almost completely insane. The Excel 97-2003 file format is a 349 page PDF file. But wait, that’s not all there is to it! This document includes the following interesting comment: Each Excel workbook is stored in a compound file. You see, Excel 97-2003 files are OLE compound documents, which are,...

Actual Performance, Perceived Performance
via Coding Horror by (author unknown) on March 02, 2008
If you've used Windows Vista, you've probably noticed that Vista's file copy performance is noticeably worse than Windows XP. I know it's one of the first things I noticed. Here's the irony-- Vista's file copy is based on an improved algorithm and actually performs better in most cases than XP. So how come it seems so darn slow?Let's start with Mark Russinovich's...

The Media markets
via Seth's Blog by Seth Godin on May 06, 2008
The product they sell is drama. When I went to business school, we spent an entire 90 minute class on how to read the Wall Street Journal. That's a rare treat... being taught how to understand and psyche out the media. With the vast bulk of our news coming online now, it's worth taking a second to look at the way mainstream media markets drama. You know and I know that they're doing...

Marketing HR
via Seth's Blog by Seth Godin on February 18, 2008
Yesterday's post led to some good email about Human Resources. Understand that in days of yore, factories consisted of people and machines. The goal was to use more machines, fewer people, and to design processes so that the people were interchangeable, low cost and easily replaced. The more leverage the factory-owner had, the better. Hence Personnel or the even more cruel term: HR. It...

Silly Traffic
via Seth's Blog by Seth Godin on April 23, 2008
This is a truth of the Internet: When traffic comes to your site without focused intent, it bounces. 75% of all unfocused visitors leave within three seconds. Any site, anywhere, anytime. 75% bounce rate within three seconds. By unfocused, I mean people who visit via Digg or Stumbleupon or even a typical Google search. If your site is spammy or clearly selling something, the number is...

The day the music died
via dive into mark by Mark on May 05, 2008
This is a letter I sent to my father to explain what it means that Microsoft is pulling support for MSN Music. Tech issues like this often bubble up into the media that he reads, but they are rarely explained well. My father assumes I have an opinion on such stories, and he is rarely wrong.Actually, it is still technically in the future tense. The day the music dies will be August 31, 2008.But...

Alt Text: Secrets of the 7 Basic Blog Posts
via Wired Top Stories by Lore Sjöberg on June 03, 2008
According to some people, there are only 36 basic story plots that just get reused. Others say there are merely 20. Some people even say there's only one plot, but they probably just watch too many Michael Bay movies. I like the theory that there are only seven plots. It's a nice round number, and the plots are vague enough that you can shoehorn anything from Citizen Kane to a cereal...
