Call for all libraries to stop supporting digital rights management
via LibrarianInBlack by Sarah Houghton-Jan on May 14, 2008
... that any library offers, except for a few select DRM-free Overdrive titles, will have DRM attached to it. I agree with the DBD tagline that "books should not expire," but until there is much more of a push by all end-users, not just those of libraries, I don't see that changing. And libraries will be left with the choice of offering DRM-laden eContent or offering no eContent at all.

Web Work Daily blogs about the top 8 alternative search engines. The venerable metasearcher, Dogpile makes the cut as does killer people searcher Zabasearch. There's even a nice plug for altsearchengines, a cool blog devoted to tools beyond the Big 3; be sure to click on the tabs for this site -- e.g., "Verticals" - - to learn about niche services.

The Kindle Can’t Hold a Candle to Real Paper
via The Bivings Report by jcrump on May 15, 2008
... the 16th century." And yes, perhaps I was a little too harsh on my good friend, the Microsoft Surface. I did venture to a bar that housed the machines, and yes, I enjoyed aimlessly flicking virtual bubbles around while making idle small talk. Ah, the future.I preface this post with this admission because I am about to ‘go 20th century' on another product, the Amazon Kindle.(more…)

digsby - im + email + social networking
via infodoodads by Michael on May 15, 2008
It’s time to throw out your browsers. Well, at least temporarily. Digsby reminds me of Trillian and Meebo, etc. in that it consolidates different instances of yourself into a single tool. However, Digsby goes further than just IM and also integrates e-mail and social networking. It is a standalone program and not web-based, so I’m breaking an infodoodad rule, but I like it so much I...
