Don’t Check Your Valuables
via Ma.tt by glenda on May 15, 2008
Another lesson learned the hard way — on the flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco on US Airways my baggage was delayed, and then when it arrived the following morning all my camera equipment was missing. Since I had just been to Italy I was carrying more than usual. The toll ended up being:Nikon D3Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IFNikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G EDLeica M8Leica 50mm f/1.0 NoctiluxCards, cases,...

Smithsonian Magazine | Travel | You got a problem with that?
via www.smithsonianmag.com by (author unknown) on May 15, 2008
But I think it's also possible that New Yorkers just appear smarter, because they make less separation between private and public life. That is, they act on the street as they do in private. In the United States today, public behavior is ruled by a kind of compulsory cheer that people probably picked up from television and advertising and that coats their transactions in a smooth, shiny...

Getting Real: Seek and Celebrate Small Victories (by 37signals)
via gettingreal.37signals.com by (author unknown) on May 14, 2008
Shared by Martin Gordon More ammo for my fight to shorten release cycles at work...The most important thing in software development is motivation. Motivation is local — if you aren't motivated by what you are working on right now, then chances are it won't be as good as it should be. In fact, it's probably going to suck.Long, drawn out release cycles are motivation killers. They...

The 25-year-old BSD bug
via The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) by Robert Palmer on May 13, 2008
Filed under: Humor, UNIX / BSDToday in 1983, "Beat It" by Michael Jackson may have topped the charts, but a slight bug in the *dir() library was found only a few days ago by OpenBSD developer Mark Balmer (no rela -- oh, wait). OS News has the entire amusing tale of the bug in BSD (the UNIX foundation of Mac OS X) that's been alive and kicking for nearly 25 years. Balmer contacted Marshall...

Look! Life Size Luxury Tax
via Apartment Therapy Chicago by janel on May 12, 2008
We regularly pass by this corner in our neighborhood, which is one that has seen a large amount of teardowns and extensive rebuilding to create large, luxurious single family homes. Someone has taken a single panel of the sidewalk and turned it......into a life size Monopoly board square, making a bit of public art and a comment on the always changing economics of neighborhoods at the same time....

Don't call me, I won't call you. (on virb.com)
via virb.com by (author unknown) on May 12, 2008
Shared by Martin Gordon Quoted For Truth. Luckily I've been able to convince people that I'm not trying to be rude when I don't answer their calls when I can't talk to them. I hate people who answer just to say, "Can I call you back later?"I'd like to make it a rule, in the most friendly way possible. I just don't want to talk on the phone. At all. To anyone. Why?...
