via Official Gmail Blog by Gmail Blog on May 13, 2008
Posted by Wiltse Carpenter, Tech Lead, Gmail PerformanceGreat performance has always been an obsession at Google and it's something that we think about and work on everyday. We want Gmail to be really fast, and we keep working on ways to make it faster. Gmail's architecture eliminates many of the delays in reading mail by employing techniques like prefetching, but recently we decided to...

Dead Man's Switch
via The Daily WTF by Jake Vinson on May 14, 2008
"This is how you set up the monitoring?" Shawn G. looked down at the system in disbelief. There was a watchdog connected to a power relay to ensure that it was always running. The power relay sat right next to the power switch in a sealed environmental enclosure.Oh well, Shawn thought, this is what I'm here to work on. I'll get this set up right. He reached into the dark enclosure for the...

Emerald City ComiCon Memories
via WWdN: In Exile by wil@wilwheaton.net (Wil Wheaton) on May 14, 2008
I do the 48-minute work thing, and I'm as swamped and panicked as I think I've ever been as I prepare for a screen test tomorrow and a convention this weekend. This is certainly the worst since I was working on my PAX keynote, but I work well when I'm terrified. During this panic, blogging falls into the "do fun stuff for 12 minutes and then GBTW" part of the hour, so please forgive...

What’s in a window.name?
via Ajaxian by Chris Heilmann on May 13, 2008
Sometimes it is interesting to see that knowledge from the 10,000 B.C. period of web development can be used in new ways to create - to play it safely - interesting ideas. Each window in a browser has a name property which became pretty much useless when we stopped using pop-up windows and tried to make them communicate with each other by name.Thomas Frank, however wrote a small library that uses...

CSS Child Selector Performance
via Ajaxian by Dion Almaer on May 12, 2008
... is slow down using child selectors over direct class name declarations in IE6, IE7 and Safari 3. Safari 3 being the most impacted by child selectors. Firefox 2 has some impact, and Firefox 3 doesn’t seem to be impacted at all. That said, this is a very extreme test, it is not often you’d have 20,000 class definitions in a single page or that all of them would use 4 levels of child selector.

Three Personal Highlights
via Eric.Weblog() by (author unknown) on May 09, 2008
... time of 14:57 per mile. After setting up my new subwoofer, I put in the Return of the King DVD and zoomed ahead to the Minas Tirith battle scenes. Seconds later, my younger daughter ran upstairs and cried, "Daddy, your movie is shaking the whole house!"All three of these were moments of great personalsatisfaction. The third one was the only one to result in maniacal laughter.
