Something is technically wrong...
via aBlog by Alex Gawley on July 02, 2008
Is Twitter worth $1bn or nothing at all?I read those two articles yesterday and to be honest I'm still a bit of a fence sitter on this debate. On the one hand Twitter have built a hugely compelling user and developer proposition. Simple interaction with your friends, audience and web services via IM and SMS is a killer app. Because of that they are amassing a significant user and developer...

The Greatest Invention in Computer Science
via Coding Horror by (author unknown) on June 07, 2008
What do you think the single greatest invention in computer science is? Besides the computer itself, I mean.Seriously, before reading any further, pause here for a moment and consider the question.I've talked before about how young so-called modern computer programming languages really are, and it bears repeating for context.C is roughly as old as I am; FORTRAN is as old as my parents. But...

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
via The Official Google Blog by A Googler on June 07, 2008
Posted by Marissa Mayer, VP Search Products & User Experience, and Micheal Lopez, Web DesignerYou may have noticed that Google has a new favicon, the small icon you see in your browser next to the URL or in your bookmarks list. Some people have wondered why we changed our favicon -- after all, we hadn't in 8.5 years(!). The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale...

The Evolution of Pre-Launch Gmail In Screenshots
via TechCrunch by Mark Hendrickson on June 06, 2008
When visiting Google yesterday for the unveiling of Gmail Labs, product manager Keith Coleman took us on a tour of the Googleplex’s Building 47.Along the way, we saw Googlers hard at work on Gmail, Reader, Calendar, and other related projects. But the coolest part was a stop in a conference room where Coleman had laid out printed screenshots depicting the evolution of Gmail’s user interface...

Beer Magnet
via Cosmic Variance by Julianne on May 14, 2008
A moment of small genius spotted at a friend’s house:It’s a magnet from a disemboweled hard drive, mounted right underneath a bottle opener. Snags the bottle cap like a charm.

OAuth Coming to All Google Data APIs
via ProgrammableWeb by John Musser on April 27, 2008
Standardization, or lack thereof, around identity, authentication and authorization for open web APIs is one of the greatest challenges to mashup application developers today. So it’s quite notable that Google not only just quietly added OAuth support to their Google Contacts API but also stated that “This is our first step towards OAuth enabling all Google Data APIs.” With over a dozen...

Understanding Model-View-Controller
via Coding Horror by (author unknown) on May 05, 2008
Shared by Bruce Boughton Good explanation of MVC for the uninitiated.Like everything else in software engineering, it seems, the concept of Model-View-Controller was originally invented by Smalltalk programmers.More specifically, it was invented by one Smalltalk programmer, Trygve Reenskaug. Trygve maintains a page that explains the history of MVC in his own words. He arrives at these...

Thoughts On FriendFeed
via A VC by Fred on March 18, 2008
I know I am late to this discussion and that many bloggers have already weighed in on this topic already. Back a few months ago, the New York Times covered FriendFeed and after reading the story I set up my FriendFeed. I have always been a fan of aggregation and life streaming. I do a bit of that at my tumblog. But Tumblr is not a lifestreaming service and FriendFeed is.I've watched...

Actual Performance, Perceived Performance
via Coding Horror by (author unknown) on March 02, 2008
If you've used Windows Vista, you've probably noticed that Vista's file copy performance is noticeably worse than Windows XP. I know it's one of the first things I noticed. Here's the irony-- Vista's file copy is based on an improved algorithm and actually performs better in most cases than XP. So how come it seems so darn slow?Let's start with Mark Russinovich's...
