via ReadWriteWeb by Marshall Kirkpatrick on May 15, 2008
In a deal that was surprising only in its price, CBS has announced that it will buy CNet, owners of everything from News.com to Download.com to our competitors Webware, for $1.8 billion. That's 10% more than Google paid for YouTube, and that deal was all for stocks. CBS paid a 45% premium over CNet's closing stock price and it paid it mostly in cash. CBS buying CNet is a big, complicated...

via TechCrunch by Michael Arrington on May 15, 2008

... mind and stay connected to trends, friends, and the greater world, not another computer task that takes far too long to get done. But that's exactly what it can feel like if it takes you more time to find your post ideas, tweak your markup, and make everything look right than to actually get your thoughts down. Being somewhat experienced at this blogging thing, your Lifehacker editors hav...

Tell Me About RSSmeme
via scribkin by J. Phil on May 12, 2008
This isn’t going to be any run-of-the-mill review from me. Why? Because the application I am going to review is different in several substantial ways:It isn’t a piece of software you install on your PCIt isn’t a web application like Gmail or YouTubeIt really isn’t exactly meant to be a destination page like My Yahoo! or iGoogleWhat is RSSmeme? So, given all these things that RSSmeme is...

Feedburner Stats Way Down
via everwas by ian on May 12, 2008
I noticed a big drop in the number of Feedburner subscribers to my blog over the past few days with the number of subscribers dropping nearly 50% starting sometime Thursday last week (May 8th). I noticed one other person reporting a drop and they pointed to Google Reader numbers being the culprit and, sure enough, if you look at the two graphs below, my Google Reader numbers are down...

Piwik: Open Source Google Analytics Alternative
via ReadWriteWeb by Bernard Lunn on May 08, 2008
Google Analytics may be free, but it is still based on proprietary technology - which means you only ever get reports on the things that Google thinks are necessary and some of those reports are aimed at people using Google's other services (managing campaigns on AdWords, for example). Further, using Google Analytics means that you're tied to Google's TOS. Enter Piwik, which aims to...

Web application Glasnost simulates BitTorrent downloads on your computer to determine whether or not your internet service provider (ISP) is throttling your BitTorrent transfers. It does so by measuring the difference between your regular download speed and your BitTorrent download speed, testing against different ports and other variables to get a better idea of what exactly is being throttled....

Understanding Model-View-Controller
via Coding Horror by (author unknown) on May 06, 2008
Shared by Bruce Boughton Good explanation of MVC for the uninitiated.Like everything else in software engineering, it seems, the concept of Model-View-Controller was originally invented by Smalltalk programmers.More specifically, it was invented by one Smalltalk programmer, Trygve Reenskaug. Trygve maintains a page that explains the history of MVC in his own words. He arrives at these...

RSSmeme Is 100% Democratic; Is Your Aggregator?
via benjamingolub.com by Benjamin Golub on May 06, 2008
... filtering these stories out with some sort of blacklist. I just assumed that since RSSmeme and ReadBurner operate on a different set of feeds that it had not bubbled up on their end. Then this Twitter post showed up in FriendFeedHow can ReadBurner be democratic if they have some sort of blacklisting going on? Am I getting to riled up over a bunch of cats with captions? What do you think?
