Thomas Doyle's miniature art
via MAKE Magazine by Gareth Branwyn on May 08, 2008
Artist Thomas Doyle makes fascinating art, tells compelling stories, with model train miniatures and scenery. I've always been strangely attracted to these miniature components and wondered why more people don't make art, jewelry, dioramas, etc. with them. Google Reader Adds Shared Notes, Non-Feed Page Capture [Social Bookmarking]
via Lifehacker by Kevin Purdy on May 06, 2008
Google adds yet another social-ish function, "Notes," to its Reader feed-browsing tool. The practical use comes from a new bookmarklet that posts whatever page you're looking at to your shared Reader items, with your own notes attached. You can also post notes with no link at all to be shared with your "friends," making it a kind of Twitter clone for, well, avid feed readers. As one blogger...

Bathroom signs: the Call of the Artist meets the Call of the Wild
via core77.com's design blog by (author unknown) on May 08, 2008
We hate going to those artsy bar-cafes where the Male/Female signs for the bathroom have been replaced by abstract symbols. We don't want to puzzle things out on our way to the loo--any additional step between us and the toilet is a hindrance. But for those of you that find such signs entertaining, here are a couple links to galleries of them: 1, 2. Warning: NSFW...unless you work in one of...

Fractal Laptop Etch
via MAKE Magazine by Becky Stern on May 06, 2008
This weekend at Maker Faire Instructables brought their laser cutter and was laser etching laptops, phones, and other things for free. My favorite is Alex Schlegel's fractal-etched Vaio (source image included). If you had your gear etched, add a picture to the MAKE Flickr pool![Read this article] [Comment on this article]

Beijing's enormous, zero-energy LED screen: this month?
via core77.com's design blog by (author unknown) on May 05, 2008
This massive LED screen, dubbed the Zero Energy Media Wall by Greenpix, is supposed to be unveiled this month in Beijing. Said to be the world's largest, the screen is also self-sustaining--it collects solar during the day, then uses the juice to fire up the LEDs at night. Even more surprisingly, the ZEM Wall is apparently intended for digital art, and not advertising. Whether it will come...

NY Design Week 2008 Preview: Rosella Folding Umbrella at designboom
via core77.com's design blog by (author unknown) on May 05, 2008
For the artifact easiest to riff on, the umbrella's right up there with the chair, lamp, and fruitbowl. Nothing Design Group's Rosella is a sweet 'n' sly one-liner, and though we hope New York Design Week will be a lot drier than Milan, it wouldn't hurt to pack one of these in your backpack while you're here. Did we say backpack? We meant clutched in the crook of your...

Japanese Matches - Too Cute To Burn
via core77.com's design blog by (author unknown) on May 02, 2008
It is hard to believe they are real matches and not little edible sugar-candies. Of course that isn't likely as it wouldn't go over well with parents, but, on the other hand, put them with some candy cigarettes and you have a Lil' Smoker Starter Kit. See them at The Dieline...

Good agency website shock
via Noisy Decent Graphics by Ben on May 01, 2008
I love this. Now, there are probably people who hate it. That's fine. I like it and this is my playground with my rules.Instead of building the usual wank agency website Modernista! have utilised the tools of web 2.0. So the work is shown through Flickr.Easy to use, easy to find, easy to access, easy to comment on, easy to bookmark, easy to share. good, good, good. The About Us page utilises...
