Structure 08 Tickets: Almost Sold Out
via GigaOM by Om Malik on June 18, 2008
It’s time to exhale: Our first Structure 08 conference, slated to be held on June 25th in San Francisco, is almost sold out. With a week to go we have just 25 tickets left, and I have to tell you that despite the long sleepless nights ahead, I’m pretty jazzed about the event.Amongst ticket buyers, we’ve seen a lot of venture capitalists that are clearly looking at the infrastructure space...

Tire Slime
via Cool Tools by (author unknown) on June 16, 2008
I have found that anti-puncture strips are often not wide enough to stop thorns from piercing bike tubes, as the strips are only useful in the middle of the tire. I started using Slime, a green liquid sealant, after talking to a bike-borne cop who had very good results. I now use the stuff in my mountain bike and wheelbarrow tires. Actually, I bought pre-Slimed bike tubes when I got new tires...

Clean and Optimize Windows Systems with nCleaner [Featured Windows Download]
via Lifehacker by Kevin Purdy on June 03, 2008
Windows only: We're pretty big fans of the CCleaner for wiping out unnecessary junk on a PC, but nCleaner, a free Windows utility, is a good alternative for those who want to do more system optimization from inside one program. In addition to wiping out the files left behind by browser, IM clients, uninstalled programs, and other usual suspects, nCleaner can modify auto-starting programs,...

How would you compress your MySQL Backup
via Planet MySQL by MySQL Performance Blog on June 06, 2008
... below 100GB in size compression performance is usually not the problem (though backup impact on server performance may well be). We also assume backup is done on physical level here (cold backup, slave backup, innodb hot backup or snapshot backup) as this is only way practical at this point for databases of decent size. Two important compression questions you need to decide for backup is ...

Facebook adds Social Ads reviews, ruins all our fun [Online Advertising]
via Valleywag by (author unknown) on June 06, 2008
Shared by Pat its my ideaFor months now, we've watched as Facebook served users pornographic ads, as well as less expertly targeted come-ons. Now, with a new feature that lets users review the ads they've been served, the company's figured out a smart way to fix the problem. We're a little sad. Who won't miss the days when straight men get pitched as gay, or a NSFW banner ad...

Economies of Non-Scale
via Nati Shalom's Blog by (author unknown) on June 04, 2008
Shared by Pat Amdahls's law in actionScalability forces us to think differently. What worked on a small scale doesn't always work on a large scale -- and costs are no different. To measure the cost impact of scaling, let's look at the amount of resources required to scale to a given level. We'll use Amdahl's Law as a method to measure the amount of required CPUs. This will...

via Geeking with Greg by (author unknown) on May 28, 2008
Shared by mndoci Whoa!!!James Hamilton writes about Yahoo's "over 2 petabyte repository of user click stream and context data with an update rate for 24 billion events per day".It apparently is built on top of a modified version of PostgreSQL. In his post, James speculates on the details of the internals. Very interesting. Please see also Eric Lai's article in ComputerWorld, "Size...

Targeted Advertising
via |dev|null by (author unknown) on June 04, 2008
Shared by Pat note to self targeting bald men makes them grumpyThere are evil people in this world. You know the type that I'm talking about. I'm talking about people that you'd never let your kids around. People that you'd never buy a house in the same town if you knew that they lived there. People whom you watch closely out of the corner of your eye when you see them in a...

Was eBay a fad?
via Rough Type: Nicholas Carr's Blog by (author unknown) on June 02, 2008
Shared by Pat amazing and sets up a amazon vrs ebay battleWe already know that the famously cute story of eBay's origin - founder Pierre Omidyar launched the site to help his fiancee trade the PEZ dispensers she collected - was a lie cooked up by a PR operative. We also know that the company's vaunted "reputation system" - the foundation of what has long been perceived as a radically new...
