dual head xrandr configuration
via Ulrich Drepper by (author unknown) on May 22, 2008
ajax told me that extra wide screens now work with the latest Fedora 9 binaries for X11. So I had to try it out and after some experimenting I got it to work. So save others the work here is what I did.Hardware:AIT FireGL V36002x Dell 3007FPWI use the free driver, of course. No need for 3D here. The old way to get a spanning desktop was to use Xinerama. This has been replaced by xrandr...

Linux filesystem defragmentation flame war
via MDLog:|sysadmin by - Marius - on May 27, 2008
Earlier this week I’ve read this article: “Defragmentation of Linux Filesystems“. The title and the headline made me interested enough, to go ahead and read it and see if there was something there to show me that linux filesystems do need defragmentation. The result was that I was not convinced at all, and on a quick check on some of my most used systems I could not see any defragmentation...

Set a Firefox World Record!
via The Mozilla Blog by mary on May 27, 2008
The New York Times ad…Firefox Flicks…the Firefox crop circle…Operation Firefox…you name it! The Firefox community is always up to some cool, collaborative way to declare their passion for Firefox. What better way to do this than band together to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours?!It’s a whole lot easier and safer than donning a beard of bees or...

What Are You Doing In Front Of Your Computer All Day?
via chimeric.de: Blog of Michael Klier by chi on May 27, 2008
This is a question I hear way too often from my flat mates, friends and family. Most of the time, a conversation that started with such a question goes something like:
What are you doing in front of your computer all day? Hmmmmm, I'm working ... kind of. All the time? Not all the time, but well, probably most of it. Aren't you chatting or stuff like... Shared by: livibetter,

via FOSSwire by Peter on May 27, 2008
6.5 of 10 In this multi-part post, I’ll be going through and looking at several different open source forum solutions. When it comes to forum software, one of the most popular choices is phpBB. However, it’s by no means the only option for setting up a forum using FOSS, so here I’ll be looking at some alternatives you can use.In each of these quick-fire shootout posts, I’ll cover...

Running Out of Space?
via Daily Vim by Travis Whitton on May 26, 2008
Running out of space on your HD? I am on a few of my machines. I found the following small Perl script that does a great job helping me locate redundant files. It recurses through a given root directory and looks for files of the same size. When it finds two files of the same size, it does an md5sum on them to determine if they're duplicates. It runs pretty quickly and is easy to tweak to...

Get a room!
via FriendFeed Blog by Kevin Fox on May 21, 2008
It started when we wanted a better way to share feature ideas and product plans with each other here at FriendFeed, but not the rest of the world -- a mini FriendFeed of our own. We could have set this up on its own machine in the office, but we knew that we weren't alone in our desire and that the right way to go was to extend FriendFeed's capabilities for everyone. And so FriendFeed...
