Deciding The Fate of Dante and ‘Phoenix’ — How Capcom Predicts Game Sales
via MTV Multiplayer by Patrick Klepek on March 25, 2008
Remember how difficult it was to find the first “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney”? Contrary to message board conspiracy theories, that wasn’t actually Capcom’s fault. When I tried (and failed) to buy “Tetris DS,” it made me wonder. How does a publisher predict demand? How do they figure out how many copies to manufacture and ship, and when (and why) do they halt production lines?I’ve...

Google's $475k Bodyguards: Cheap! (GOOG)
via Silicon Alley Insider by Peter Kafka on March 25, 2008
... from 2006, and we still don't know why the company spends a half-mil on his security -- but nothing on Larry and Sergey's. But we do know that by CEO standards, Eric's costs aren't beyond the pale. And by at least one measuring stick, Eric's security needs are minimal: Last year Oracle (ORCL) paid $1.7 million for Larry Ellison's security tab.All this and more can be fo...

... at “Very High.” They include: Physics Quality, Shaders Quality, Volumetric Quality, Post Processing Quality and Water Quality. Everything else was at “High.” The game looks phenomenal with such high in-game settings. We also found 1920x1200 playable with the same settings at “Very High”, but we did have to lower Objects Quality, Game Effects Quality and Particles Quality to ...

Shooting for Realism: How Accurate are Video-Game Weapons?
via Evil Avatar - News Items by The Continental on March 25, 2008
Popular Mechanics; perhaps best known for selling me on the pipe dream of building a hovercraft in my garage via their back of magazine advertisements, at the tender age of 8, has apparently taken a break from wringing every last ounce of joy out of childhood to take a look at how closely modeled video game weapons are to their real life counterparts. Quote: With 200 unique variables for each...

Fallout 3 Has 200 Endings
via Evil Avatar - News Items by bapenguin on March 24, 2008
How many endings good a wood chuck chuck, if a wood chuck good chuck endings? 200. Because that's how many endings Fallout 3 will contain according to the latest OXM Podcast. The game was originally slated to have between 9 and 12, but apparently that just didn't cut it. So now there's 200. That's 1 more than 199 and 191 more than 9. That's a lot of endings. ...

Tales from the Sausage Factory: Why Those Big Downloads for Simple Updates?
via TidBITS: Mac News for the Rest of Us by (Michael Ash) on March 20, 2008
[Editor's note: I was foolhardy enough to ask Michael Ash, a software engineer at Rogue Amoeba, why the company kept pushing me 10 MB updates of Airfoil for every micro-release as a comment on the company's blog entry about an update to their products required due to Apple's Security Update 2008-002. His explanation slightly boggled. He agreed to adapt his email into this article,...

Shamrock 1/2 Marathon Summary
via don't forget to water the chiarunner. by chiarunner on March 15, 2008
2:30:38I must admit, I could have done a lot better. My goal was 2:30, I made the goal (for the most part), but at mile 10 I actually SAW the 2:15 pace dude. The only reason I stopped at that point was because I realized that I was running out of energy quickly and still had several miles to go. I stopped and walked for quite some time before regaining pace and going forward. I’m still...

Fatal Head Swap
via Photoshop Disasters by Cosmo7 on March 14, 2008
For reasons that probably only make sense to Koreans, Korean posters for Fatal Instinct 2 required a head swap for Sharon Stone, so that she had wet hair.Unfortunately the retouching budget didn't stretch to updating the dry hair in the mirrors behind her.
