Amazon May Sell $750 Million In Kindles by 2010 (That’s A Lot Of Kindles)
via TechCrunch by Michael Arrington on May 15, 2008
The Kindle, Amazon’s ugly but useful ebook reader that launched in November 2007, may be a burgeoning hit, says Citigroup Analyst Mark Mahaney. Citi expects Amazon to generate between $400 million and $750 million in revenue from the Kindle by 2010, or 1% - 3% of Amazon’s total revenue. The key points of differentiation with the Kindle and competing devices is the fact that books and other...

Inventor of the Web Wins $350,000 to Reform New Media Journalism
via Mashable! by Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins on May 15, 2008
Timothy Berners-Lee is the inventor of the Web, a fact that often gets overlooked when other showboats come along and claim that they invented the entire Internet (I’m looking at you, Mr. Gore). However Berners-Lee didn’t just end his involvement at the mere moment of innovation. While still at PodTech, Robert Scoble conducted an interview with Sir Berners-Lee, last November. During the...

Looks like the world Community Grid has started a project investigating “super rice,” which sounds like it’s one of these climate ready crops being developed: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/14/join-the-hunt-for-super-rice/.

Google Invests In BrightSource
via John Battelle's Searchblog by (author unknown) on May 15, 2008
One of the key themes this year at the Web 2 Summit will be how the web is addressing the larger limits of the world. Google.org is set up to do that, I applaud the investment they are making in solar. More here.

Happy Birthday, Pop
via John Battelle's Searchblog by (author unknown) on May 15, 2008
My father, Richard Battelle, turned 74 today. Happy Birthday, Pop!I don't blog about family much, and today I realized, as I snapped this rather out of focus shot on my phone, that perhaps I should from time to time. If I truly believe in this whole Database of Intentions and search thing, I realize that this site, which is pretty much my main outpost on the web, should memorialize folks like...

More Than Greenwashing: The Advantages of LEED
via Tropophilia by Taylor on May 15, 2008
I’ve been fortunate enough to tour two LEED-certified facilities (one Gold Certified, the other Platinum) in the past two weeks. Being in these spaces has helped solidify in my mind that green building–done well–creates living and working environments with advantages that are obvious and attractive to even the biggest green skeptics.First I visited Warren Wilson College. This small...

Microsoft intros the TouchWall -- maps will never be the same again
via Engadget by Joshua Topolsky on May 15, 2008
Filed under: DisplaysIf you've been watching CNN's election coverage lately (and we think you have), then you've probably seen anchor John King tripping the light fantastic on the channel's Magic Wall touchscreen. Apparently, Microsoft has come up with its own version of the board -- essentially a Surface flipped on its side and mounted. The device, known as the TouchWall, joins a...

Comment on More Than Greenwashing: The Advantages of LEED by Bruce
via Comments for Tropophilia by Bruce on May 15, 2008
Taylor - very cool! Hopefully these buildings are the way of the future. From what you’ve described, I think LEED sounds like a pretty good standard for sustainable buildings, but you mentioned that there are criticisms. Can you point some of those out to us?

Dude, William Shatner Totally Loves TechCrunch
via TechCrunch by Michael Arrington on May 15, 2008
Autograph sports and celebrity memorabilia is a $1 billion/year business in the U.S. alone. The problem is, up to 90% of it is counterfeit.Enter Los Angeles based LiveAutographs, a site that sells celebrity autographs that are guaranteed to be authentic - because they take a video of the celebrity writing the autograph and message and post it on their website. I am a huge William Shatner fan (who...

Comment on More Than Greenwashing: The Advantages of LEED by Taylor
via Comments for Tropophilia by Taylor on May 15, 2008
Absolutely, and sorry for the omission. Most of the criticism of LEED stems from the fact that it’s a points-based system that’s not particularly well-weighted. In other words, if I’m designing a building, I can get points by installing bike racks to encourage bike commuting or points for a green roof to reduce storm run-off. the difference in cost and commitment with those two things is...
