The Weird Economics of Information
via Union Square Ventures: A New York Venture Capital Fund Focused on Early Stage & Startup Investing by brad on June 01, 2008
Several months ago I ventured into the spooky economics of information with a post that suggested that data had an increasing marginal utility. A number of folks like Albert, who know a whole lot more about economics than I do, argue that it was not exactly an increasing marginal utility, but they acknowledged that there was something weird going on. Relying again on my naiveté, I thought I’d...

English nurseries fingerprinting parents "for security"
via Boing Boing by Cory Doctorow on June 01, 2008
Two nurseries in Kent, England are fingerprinting parents as they drop off and pick up kids "for safety." Nevermind that statistically, your kids are far more likely to be snatched and/or abused by a parent (or someone who works at a nursery!) than by a stranger. On the other hand, giving out copies of your fingerprints to every weenie who's got a wild safety hair up their arse puts you at...

Why Do We Accept Signatures by Fax?
via Wired Top Stories by Bruce Schneier on May 28, 2008
Aren't fax signatures the weirdest thing? It's trivial to cut and paste -- with real scissors and glue -- anyone's signature onto a document so that it'll look real when faxed. There is so little security in fax signatures that it's mind-boggling that anyone accepts them. Yet people do, all the time. I've signed book contracts, credit card authorizations, nondisclosure...

Steampunk USB Stick Does The Impossible: Makes USB Sexy
via Gizmodo UK by Martin Lynch on May 27, 2008
The only problem with all the fantastic steampunk’d gadgets out there is that they are the work of obsessive, talented people and there’s very little chance of us being able to buy them. I’ve lusted after the Steampunk PC, drooled over the stunning Steampunk Stars Wars Figures and planned on selling a small child to own the freaky Steampunk Laptop and now, I’d like to own this one-off...

Seesmic: Why it's so important to just frackin' start
via The Jason Calacanis Weblog by Jason Calacanis on May 24, 2008
Loic is a good friend of mine. He's had me to Paris to speak at his wonderful events, I've had him stay at my place (and take video), and we spent some time over Thanksgiving together. I think the world of him, and love his family. He's just a great guy. That's why it was so difficult for me, when we sat down to go over his startup, to give him my honest feedback on the pre-launch...

G8 agreement would criminalise having copyrighted content on your iPod
via CrunchGear by Nicholas Deleon on May 26, 2008
How’s this for a fine how-do-you-do? It seems Canada is preparing, in conjunction with other G8 countries, some sort of trade agreement that would make having copyrighted material on your iPod and laptop (and so on) illegal. What’s more, the framework would give international border guards the authority to confiscate such electronic devices based on the mere suspicion of copyright...

Avcen Jetpod T-100 City Flying Taxi says "naught" to highways
via Engadget by Joshua Fruhlinger on May 26, 2008
Filed under: Tablet PCsNo, that's not a scene from The Fifth Element II. What you see here is the Avcen Limited Jetpod T-100 City Flying Taxi, a VQSTOL (Very Quiet Short Take-off and Landing) vehicle that the company says could be in the air by 2010. The idea is that these flying cars would volley people between city centers and outlying areas (like airports) in order to reduce highway...
